Historical Epistemology Seminar, with Professors Fernando Vidal (ICREA) and Agustí Nieto-Galán (UAB) + Workshop on ongoing projects, methodologies, sources and institutions in the History of the Emotions. 28 November 2013

We are pleased to announce a new session of our Historical Epistemology Seminar, organised in collaboration with the Department of Logic, History and Philosophy of Science of the Spanish National Distance Education University (UNED). The seminar will take place on Thursday 28 November, 2013, from 11am to 1.30pm at Sala 7º Planta – Biblioteca, UNED (Paseo de Senda del Rey nº5). 

Our two invited speakers will be:

–  Prof. FERNANDO VIDAL (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats), with a talk titled El cuerpo de la ciencia y el cuerpo del milagro [The body of science and the body of the miracle].

–  Prof. AGUSTÍ NIETO-GALÁN (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), with a talk titled Del laboratorio a la esfera pública: los artistas del hambre y la autoridad científica de la medicina de finales del siglo XIX [From the laboratory to the public sphere: the hunger artists and the scientific authority of medicine at the end of the nineteenth-century].

The seminar will be followed by a Workshop titled ¿Qué hay de nuevo en la historia de las emociones? [What is new in the history of the emotions?] in which we will be discussing sources, methodologies, ongoing projects and current institutions that are producing research in this area. This second event will take place from 3:oopm to 5:00pm at the same venue.

Fernando Vidal is ICREA Research Professor in Humanities at the Centre for the History of Science of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (CEHIC-UAB). He was born in Buenos Aires, received a B.A. from Harvard University, graduate degrees in psychology and the history and philosophy of science from the Universities of Geneva and Paris, and a Habilitation from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris. He has worked extensively on the history of the human sciences from the early modern period to the present. His most recent book (2011) studies the ‘sciences of the soul’ between the late Renaissance and the Enlightement. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and an Athena Fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Since 2000, and until joining the CEHIC-UAB as ICREA Research Professior in the Fall of 2012, he was Research Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin.

Agustí Nieto-Galán is an ICREA-Acadèmia Research Professor and Director of the CEHIC-UAB. His research has focused on the history of chemistry, the relations between the technology and the environment, the natural dyes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This last area of research has resulted, most recently, in the publication of the books Popularizing Science and Technology in the European Periphery, 1800-2000 (Ashgate, 2009) and Los públicos de la ciencia. Expertos y profanos a través de la historia (Marcial Pons, 2011).
