A lively September

A new academic year starts and we have tried to do our best and start on the right foot. So we planned several activities for this September, to recover ourselves from the hot and almost idle summer.

On September 5th, some of our research members had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Anatomy “Javier Puerta” and the Olavide Museum of dermatology. Both museums are located at the Faculty of Medicine of the University Complutense. They were guided by the expert comments of Prof. of Anatomy, dr Sañudo and Prof. of Dermatology, Luis Conde-Salazar.

On September 10, 11 and 12th, some of our research members attended the Society for the Social History of Medicine Summer Conference, held in conjunction with the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary University of London, on the theme “Emotions, Health and Wellbeing”. SSHM Conference has been the first great congress devoted to the relationship between emotions and health in Europe, one of our research group’s main interests. The members of the group presented a panel with the title “Emotion as Collective Experiences”.

The group members visited several museums also as part of the research trip. On September 13th, they visited the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons and the Natural History Museum. The goal of the visit was the study of Hunter’s anatomical preparations and its relationship with other expositive methods such as taxidermy.

On September 14, they visited the Science Museum’s storehouse at Blythe House. Guided by Selina Hurley, one of the curators of the Science Museum, they studied and took pictures of several objects stored at the building, such as surgical instruments, wax and ivory anatomical figures, etc.
